The Segundo Barrio Children's Chorus, founded in 2022 by operatic tenor Jorge Garza in Houston's Second Ward, provides free, high-quality arts education to over 350 children from underserved communities. Inspired by his own transformative childhood experience in a free children's chorus, Garza created an accessible program with no auditions required across 12 ensembles. The bilingual organization particularly serves children of immigrants, helping them anchor their cultural identity while developing musical and life skills. With support from the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion Foundation, the intensive summer camp program culminates in free community concerts, giving students a sense of accomplishment and belonging that complements their academic education.
